The exhibition “Ukiyo-e. History of Japanese prints XVII-XIX centuries” will open on 2 February in Nizhny Novgorod state exhibition complex on the area of Minina, 2. About this report the organizers.
The exhibition presents 91 woodcut is among the authors of such famous artists as Suzuki Harunobu, Katsushika Hokusai, Hishikawa Moronobu, Kitagawa Utamaro, Ando Hiroshige, Utagawa Kuniyoshi.
Genuine printed engravings are accompanied with objects of traditional Japanese art — sculptures, netsuke, elements of bladed weapons of Japanese warriors, kimonos.
Ukiyo-e (literally “pictures of the floating world”) — the generalized name of a genre of Japanese painting and woodcuts, main theme of which is the joy of everyday life. Initially, the concept of “Ukiyo” was an expression which in Japanese Buddhism determined the impermanence of mundane existence, a kind of Buddhist counterpart of the biblical “vanity and ashes.”
